Welcome to Math Analysis                                         2009-10

Mr. Geluck (mrgma.pbworks.com)

This class is designed for college prep students or students with a strong interest and ability in mathematics.  Topics include functions, relations, trigonometry (circular functions), polar coordinates, complex numbers, graphing techniques, matrices, derivatives (the beginning of Calculus), and applications!  I look forward to the year.

Required Materials:  Each day you will need a pencil, paper, a 3-ring binder, homework, and a graphing calculator (TI 83+ is recommended.  TI 89 or higher is not allowed).  You will also need to print out the outline from my website before class.  This will make taking notes far easier, I promise.

Grading Components:   Updated grades will be posted weekly on Aeries.  It is your responsibility to check your grade and any missing assignments on a regular basis.  Your grade will be based on the following items:

Homework/Other:  Homework is due the beginning of the next class meeting and will be collected weekly/biweekly.  This work will be graded on effort, documentation, and neatness.  A few problems will be checked for correctness.   These homework packets will be worth 10 points.  This section also includes Mastering Skills WS’s and quizzes.

Quizzes: Quizzes will be given during chapters and will cover 2-4 sections each.

Tests: Tests will be given at the end of each chapter.  There will also be a final exam at the end of each semester.

Grading Scale:   Your grade will be calculated by a weighted average of the following components:

Tests – 45%                 Quizzes – 15%              Final Exam – 25%            Other* – 15%

*Other – HW, MS, Projects & Misc.

Your overall weighted grade will be scaled as follows:

A (90-100%)        B (80-89%)        C (70-79%)        D (60-69%)       F (59% and below)

Absences and Make-up Work:  If you are absent it is your responsibility to drop in to get the assignments missed (even on days we don’t meet).  Your homework and any handouts will be in your class’s folder in the back of the room.  Prearranged absences (including sports and school activities) require missed work to be completed the day you return – that means getting your assignments in advance!  Test and quiz make-ups are to be done outside of class or in the Math Tutoring Center (MTC) within two school days of the original test.  All other work must be made up within the number of days allowed by school policy.

Extra Help and Make-up Time:  Come in for help as soon as you begin to feel lost, or immediately after absences.  I am available to help you outside of class as long as you arrange a time.  Additional help is available in the MTC, times and dates to be announced.  Remember, this is a college prep class, so I will be expecting you to treat it as such.
